Kiev AIDS Centre can be found on the inappropriately named Holiday Street. This is a series of portraits of people involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Ukraine, whether as doctors and nurses, mothers and other members of the family acting as carers, social workers or helpline operators. These people are a kind of angels.

The full extent of the Ukrainian epidemic is not known. There is little incentive to be tested, because people diagnosed as HIV+ in Ukraine are often thrown out of work, ostracised from society, and even denied access to basic healthcare due to public lack of understanding of the nature of the virus and how it is transmitted. The discrimination extends not only to the infected, but also to the people who support and help them.
